Writing to heal

Writing to heal – why don’t we have a genre with that title? I was reading through the latest twitter updates and from ‘advice to writers’ I read the following words from Franz Kafka “A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside”. These words really made me stop and think because a lot of the writing I do aside from this blog is to help me deal mentally and emotionally with what is going on within my life. These are not necessarily bad things, they are sometimes normal everyday activities such as going to work, having the will power to exercise or even how to not get caught up in my anger when someone or something has majorly irritated me.

Kafka’s reference to “the sea inside” struck a chord with me because of the number of people I have come across who have allowed themselves to get hardened inside. Their reasons for this are varied and validated but I cannot understand why people allow things to get such a hold on them that they allow themselves to be hardened. Call me a softy and or a romantic but isn’t the ability to feel what makes living so exciting? Aren’t the ups and down all part and parcel of the journey?

Come on get your axe out!

About Plantain Periodicals

Hello! Welcome to the Plantain Periodicals blogs. The name stems from the kitchen moments I had with my friends at university cooking plantain and planning our lives together. I have used this space as a window into my mind and the way I make sense of all my experiences through writing. This is where I share those conversations and moments that happen inside my head as a young woman growing up in 21st century London. Hopefully you'll be entertained and also learn a thing or two. My main blog ad: www.nissiknows.wordpress.com My literature blog: www.plantainperiodicals.wordpress.com NMx
