Looking at the tweeples I follow and I came across the following tweet “no way am I taking any job, I worked hard for this degree”. At first I laughed, then I started to feel sorry for the person who had made the statement for being so terribly deluded, then started questioning my own thinking and wondering if she was actually right. Time and time again the news never fails to remind us that these are tough times for graduates, and careers centers will encourage volunteer work in order to get experience and the bottom line is simply having a degree is just not good enough. The range of universities and the fact that now almost anyone can go to university even with the most appalling grades has to some extent lessened the significance of the qualification. Fact is in the UK having a degree does not make you that special.
As a recent graduate myself I have had to take on jobs that I would never have dreamed of doing but at the same time have learned so much about myself, about the world of business and how hard I have to work to transfer the skills I learned in university to the real world. So if you are a graduate simply waiting for that £50,000 pa job to usher you in I would seriously consider taking a rain check. Don’t get me wrong of course we should aim high but I would recommend using the ladder instead of attempting to fly.
